Whether you’re drawn to flowers, foliage, or function, choosing the right hedge starts with understanding where it will grow best.
Which Hedges Suit Your Site?
Choosing the right hedge starts with understanding your growing environment. Every site is different — and the hedge you choose should be suited to it.
While hedging plants are generally hardy, a little planning helps ensure they perform beautifully long term. For example, not all New Zealand natives thrive in enclosed urban spaces, and most dislike poorly drained or waterlogged soils. Likewise, some hedges that do well in-ground may not flourish in containers over time.
When selecting, think about factors like sunlight, shade, wind exposure, frost, water access, drainage, available space, and your desired finished height. Each Living Walls™ product range also has its own typical height limits, so it’s worth checking that your chosen variety will grow to the height and form you’re after. Each variety’s webpage includes helpful information to match the right hedge to your site. Improve Soil Drainage Before Planting Your Hedge
Which Hedges Suit Containers and Confined Spaces?
Looking for Living Walls™ hedges that thrive in troughs or planters? Some varieties handle confined spaces better than others. These are our top picks for areas where root space is limited — such as containers, raised planters, or some retaining walls. Which Hedges are Okay in Coastal Locations?
New Zealand is surrounded by the sea, with some of the most beautiful, and sometimes dramatic, coastlines in the world. While many hedge species, particularly NZ natives, are considered coastal tolerant, they still need some protection — and adequate water while establishing in a coastal site.
We encourage you to thoroughly rinse off salt residue from foliage with fresh water as soon as possible after a storm, at least until hedges have established and acclimatised to their new home.
Tolerant (coastal-friendly) varieties: Perform well in coastal settings with moderate to high salt exposure (e.g., within 100m of the sea, occasional spray).
